TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — As a tropical wave meanders through the Gulf of Mexico heading into the weekend and into early next week, Florida may see some heavy rainfall.
Just a week after Hurricane Helene slammed into the state, bringing life-threatening storm surges and causing significant amounts of damage in Tampa Bay, the area can expect more rain to return.

“Forecast models keep the system quite weak, but it does draw up tropical moisture and spreads it across the state,” Max Defender 8 Meteorologist Leigh Spann said.
According to the National Hurricane Center, the disturbance is “likely to develop” late this weekend or early next week. Regardless, it will dump a ton of rain in Mexico and Florida.

On Sunday, the rain chances increase and will continue throughout the rest of the week.
“Depending on where the low eventually tracks across the state, rain totals may be significant,” Leigh Spann added.
The Tampa Bay area could see as much as 4 to 7 inches of rain.

If the low area of pressure remains south, areas north of I-4 will not accumulate as much rain.
Despite the high rain chances, the system does not appear to be a strong wind event.
