BRANDON, Fla. (WFLA) — A 46-year-old Lakeland man was arrested early Saturday morning after he reportedly fell asleep in the center lane of Interstate 75 near Brandon.

A trooper with the Florida Highway Patrol said he was driving northbound on the interstate around midnight when he spotted the silver Ford Fusion stopped in the middle of the roadway.

Other cars had also stopped behind the vehicle, according to an arrest report.

The trooper activated his emergency lights and got beside the Ford Fusion to check on the driver. As he approached the vehicle, the trooper said he found the driver asleep at the wheel.

“I tapped on the windows multiple times and he did not wake up,” the trooper wrote in the arrest report. “The rear driver side window was rolled down, and I tapped the back of the driver seat to wake him up and he finally did.”

As soon as he was awake, officials said the driver began moving his vehicle, with body camera footage showing him slowly swerving between lanes.

The trooper repeatedly ordered the driver to pull over, and eventually the Ford Fusion came to a stop. Once out of the vehicle, the trooper said he noticed the driver had “slow, slurred speech” and was having “extreme difficulty” walking without stumbling.

In the report, officials also noted that the driver had an odor of alcohol on his breath. However, he reportedly refused to take a field sobriety test.

The driver was arrested and charged with DUI, as well as fleeing and attempting to elude a police officer. Troopers said no one was injured during the incident.
