TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A drone video from the NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Lab shows a 28-foot wave in Hurricane Milton as it passed through the Gulf of Mexico.
On Wednesday, NOAA’s Saildrone measured a wave height of 28.12 feet, with wind gusts of 75.98 mph, 40 nautical miles from the center of Milton.
“This research represents a collaborative endeavor to better understand the role of the ocean in hurricanes,” researchers said.
Hurricane Milton will make landfall on Florida’s Gulf Coast as a Category 3 storm Wednesday night.
