TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The Sunshine Skyway Bridge and Howard Frankland Bridge have closed to all traffic as Hurricane Milton makes a dangerous approach to Tampa Bay, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
In addition, the westbound lanes of the Gandy Bridge and the westbound lanes of the Courtney Campbell Bridge have closed to all traffic.
The FHP said the major bridges in Tampa Bay close when wind speeds reach a consistent speed of 45 mph or higher.
They also close the bridges when troopers determine that road conditions are no longer safe for travelers.
While the Sunshine Skyway Bridge is the first to close, troopers warned residents that all four major bridges are likely to close.
Prior to the hurricane’s arrival, Florida’s toll roads had all fees suspended to allow residents to leave the path without cost.
Due to heavy traffic on the interstates, the FHP allowed drivers to use the emergency shoulders on the inside shoulder of northbound I-75 and eastbound I-4.
