TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Wander Franco, the Tampa Bay Rays shortstop who is facing trial on sex crime allegations, was detained over the weekend, officials said.
Meregirdo Espinosa, a spokesperson for the Dominican Republic’s National Police, told the Associated Press that Franco was involved in an argument in an apartment complex’s parking lot.
According to Espinosa, guns were drawn in the argument between several men and woman.
Franco was said to be one of the two people detained in the incident.
The spokesperson said the altercation began due to “passionate motives” and involved a young female, although the exact age of the female subject was not explicitly stated in Espinosa’s quote to the Associated Press.
Franco is set to go to trial on Dec. 12 on charges of sexual abuse of a minor and human trafficking, which could land him in prison for a combined maximum of 35 years if he is convicted.
The baseball player was out on bail but was restricted to staying within the Dominican Republic, keeping him from coming back to the United States.
