TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — No rest for the weary.

After coming up short against the Chiefs on Monday Night Football, the Bucs now prepare to face the reigning NFC champion San Francisco 49ers on short rest.

Tampa Bay held a light walkthrough Wednesday in order to give players time recover from a physical game against Kansas City. With such a quick turnaround, quarterback Baker Mayfield stressed the importance of staying locked in mentally throughout the week.

“It’s a ton of mental work,” Mayfield said. “A ton of mental work, guys have to get their body right, and that’s – when you do the walk-throughs like we did today, they’re trying to allow us to recover as quickly as possible, but yeah, guys have to take the accountability to be locked in when you’re not getting the full speed reps of overcommunicating, understanding when we’re calling a certain pass play, what depth the route is at with the timing of it and all that.”

The Bucs are experiencing some major deja vu. After starting 3-1 for the second straight year, the team has dropped 4 of their last 5 games, very similar to the midseason slump they suffered a year ago when they went 1-6 over a 7-game span. Tampa Bay managed to right the ship last season and make the playoffs. They’ll have to orchestrate a similar turnaround if they want to make it back to the postseason for a franchise record fifth straight year.

“We’ve been in all these ballgames, that’s the thing,” Mayfield said . We’ve been in all these ballgames, now it’s just about executing. I think we know – it’s not adding pressure to this team, but we need this one. NFC opponent at home right before the bye week, to change this thing, change the momentum, turn it around, this is a huge one for us. It is what it is and so just continuing to stress the importance of the details and doing your job each play is the most important thing.”
