BARTOW, Fla. (WFLA) — A father was killed, and a mother in critical condition after their son shot them over the weekend, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office announced.

According to PCSO, on Saturday around 11:20 p.m., Bartow police responded to a call from 58-year-old Susan Voigt who reported that her son, 23-year-old Joseph Voigt, shot her and her husband, 63-year-old Marvin Voigt.

Susan told officers her son shot them both and fled the scene.

When officers arrived they found Marvin deceased in the driveway with gunshot wounds, and Susan inside the home with a serious gunshot wound. Bartow Fire Department and EMS performed life-saving measures on Susan at the scene.

Susan was transported to the hospital where she is currently in critical condition, but is stable.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic and senseless shooting. We sincerely appreciate the assistance provided by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office and the Orlando Police Department in this case, which led to the quick arrest of the suspect, Joseph Voigt,” said Chief Stephen Walker, Bartow Police Department.

All law enforcement agencies in the surrounding area were notified to be on the lookout for the vehicle Joseph was driving. Around 2 a.m., the vehicle was spotted in Orlando on International Drive.

The Orlando Police Department conducted a felony traffic stop on the vehicle and took Joseph into custody, where he is currently at the Orange County Jail waiting to be transported to the Polk County Jail, deputies said.

“Thanks to the rapid response of the Bartow Police Department this violent and dangerous suspect was quickly apprehended. They asked for our assistance and we were happy to oblige. My detectives will continue their thorough investigation into this crime to ensure Voigt will face the full consequences of his actions,” Sheriff Grady Judd said.

Polk deputies spoke with Joseph where he admitted to shooting his father and mother because his father was upset with him about spending his time playing video games and “riding his a**” about making something of himself and getting a job.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is assisting in the investigation.
