LAKELAND, Fla. (WFLA) — A 24-year-old Lakeland man was killed early Saturday morning after deputies said he drove off the roadway and struck a metal power pole.
The single-vehicle crash happened around 1:50 a.m. at the intersection of Pipkin Road and Old Medulla Road, south of Lakeland, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
Polk County Fire Rescue took the driver to a local hospital, where officials said he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving.
Deputies said the man did not appear to be wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. As of Saturday night, it remained unclear what caused the crash.
The intersection was shut down for nearly four hours. The sheriff’s office said the investigation was ongoing Saturday night, and no further information was immediately available.
