ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) — The Chief of St. Petersburg Police, Anthony Holloway, announced a “major break” in a 2021 murder case, that led to an arrest of a man accused of killing his girlfriend while she held their baby.
On July 31, 2021, Benjamin “Bambi” Williams killed his 27-year-old estranged girlfriend, Joana Peca in St. Petersburg. The police department said Williams had asked Peca to meet him at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens cemetery to meet their infant son.
Williams fatally shot Peca while she held their baby in the front seat of her car, while her other child sat in the back seat. He shot Peca in the face several times, according to police.
At the time of the shooting, the baby was 4 months old, and her other child was a 4-year-old boy.
Chief Holloway described Williams as “St. Petersburg’s Most Wanted,” and was identified by a good Samaritan in Mexico who saw a TikTok post about the suspect. She went to the U.S. Embassy to notify them, which ultimately led to the capture and transfer of Williams back to the States.
Officials have been searching for Williams, who was considered armed and dangerous, since the incident more than three years ago, offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.
The Chief was joined by Peca’s mother, along with U.S. Marshal William Berger and Special Agent in Charge Kirk Howard, Tampa Field Division, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives.
“Our Christmas present came early this year,” Peca’s mother said on Tuesday. “Benjamin Williams changed the lives of my family, my kids.”
The mother said that instead of finding a wedding venue or honeymoon location for her daughter, she had to find a funeral place to bury her child instead.
“Starting today, Benjamin William’s freedom is over,” she added.
Williams is charged with first-degree murder and two counts of child abuse. He is currently being held in the Pinellas County Jail.
“Thanks to the dedication of St. Petersburg Police detectives and the invaluable support of the U.S. Marshals and the ATF, a dangerous criminal was captured, bringing justice to the victim’s family. While nothing can restore the life of a beloved daughter and mother to two young children, we hope this offers them some long-overdue peace and closure,” Chief Holloway said.
