ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) — Pinellas County leaders will vote on whether to release the bonds for a new Rays stadium Tuesday evening.
The commission is scheduled to vote on $335 million worth of bonds to help cover the cost of the $1.3 billion new facility.
Excitement about the new ballpark is turning to fear for some fans.
“I’m concerned that we’re using these storms as a political ploy for an unfortunate reason,” Heather Clark said.
The vote to release the bonds has been delayed twice.
“Even my colleagues that supported the Rays deal voted to delay the bond vote because it was right after the hurricanes,” Commissioner Chris Latvala explained.
Latvala, who opposed the deal in July, is even more skeptical following the recent storms. Due to storm damage, the Rays can’t play at Tropicana Field.
The team recently announced they’ll spend next season in Hillsborough County at Steinbrenner Field.
“I’m certainly not a yes when that team is not playing in Pinellas County and not helping us recoup those very dollars we’re using to pay it,” Latvala said.
The commissioner said he wants to keep the team but wonders whether the focus and finance should be centered around restoring the beaches and communities hit by hurricanes Helene and Milton.
Clark and other fans point out, they money they’re voting on isn’t allocated for storm recovery.
“It’s going to be a year-round event center which is going to bring in revenue far past the year that he’s concerned about this loss of revenue,” she said.
Commissioners are scheduled to vote on the bonds during their meeting, which begins 2 p.m. Tuesday.
