DUNEDIN, Fla. (WFLA) — One person is dead after a boating incident near the Dunedin Causeway, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday.

Deputies arrived on the scene around 11:40 a.m. approximately two miles north of the causeway in the Intercoastal Waterway.

The sheriff’s office said 66-year-old Charles Barnes was fishing with another individual on a 17-foot Key West boat near 3 Rooker Island.

Barnes was reportedly sitting at the boat’s bow on top of a cooler while the boat was in motion when the driver let go of the wheel to fix a fishing pole, which caused the boat to pull hard to the right and throw both men from the vessel.

The driver managed to swim back to the boat, but Barnes was run over by the vehicle and his arm was caught in the propellers, pulling him underwater.

The driver flagged down other boaters after being unable to free Barnes, but he was pronounced deceased after authorities arrived on scene.

Investigators said nothing suspicious occurred and no impairment was involved.
