SAFETY HARBOR, Fla. (WFLA) — Two firefighters were struck by an SUV at a Safety Harbor fire station on Friday morning.

Safety Harbor Fire Chief Andrew Hawkins said the firefighters were hit at around 9 a.m. while washing the station’s vehicles in the front driveway at 3905 McMullen Booth Road.

Officials identified the two injured firefighters as Captain Joseph Hans, 50, and Firefighter/Paramedic Ryan Craig, 36.

Hans suffered serious injuries but has been stabilized. According to Hawkin, the impact from the SUV threw him into the fire station bay and under a vehicle, but he was not pinned.

“His wife is with him at this time,” the chief said. “We were able to talk, have good conversations. He is certainly in good spirits, but he is currently being treated at this time.”

Meanwhile, Craig suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was assessed at the scene.

Chief Deputy Paul Halle of the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said the incident happened while a deputy was attempting to assist Malinda White, the 63-year-old driver of the SUV that was disabled on McMullen Booth Road, just south of SR-580.

According to the sheriff’s office, Deputy Erickson stopped to help White, whose vehicle was blocking the curb lane on the road due to her transmission being disabled and being unable to put her car in neutral.

The deputy was trying to push the SUV with his vehicle’s push bumper to the entrance of a nearby golf course, but White bypassed where she was supposed to pull in.

The driver told authorities her brakes were not working, leading her to abruptly turn right into the parking lot of Safety Harbor Fire Station 53, causing her SUV to hit the two firefighters and crash into the station.

The crash sent Hans and Craig to the hospital, both in stable condition.

White was hospitalized with non-serious injuries, Halle said. The chief deputy also told reporters he did not expect criminal charges to be filed in this incident.

A fundraiser has been started to support Hans’ recovery. You can learn more here.

This remains an ongoing investigation.
