D-SNAP site opens for Pinellas County residents in need of food assistance

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — With Pinellas County being one of the hardest hit areas by back-to-back hurricanes, the disaster supplemental nutritional assistance program, or D-SNAP site at Tropicana Field is assisting its residents.

Officials note that there are some eligibility requirements that must be met in order to qualify for the benefits.

“You cannot be receiving Snap assistance or regular food assistance program. You have to meet financial eligibility requirements and suffer a disaster-related loss,” Bridget Royster with DCF said. “That could be loss of income, loss of food, or other disaster-related losses that you incurred at the time to prepare for the storm.”

Plenty of help is on hand here to walk residents through the application process. Getting approved means walking away with the benefits you need.

“Yes, if you are approved, you will leave here with an EBT card,” Royster said.

That type of efficiency is one that people applying for assistance said they really appreciate.

“I thought the process was excellent! The service was really nice, I went through the line very quickly, it was handled very well and I got in and out,” Pinellas County resident David Tinsley said.

The pop-up tent, however, is not for applicants who were approved via a phone interview. Residents who receive their EBT card in the mail are not required to show up in person.

The Tropicana Field site will be open Saturday through Monday from 7 am.. to 5 p.m. Officials strongly suggest pre-registering online to help expedite the application process in person.
