NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. (WFLA) — A U.S. Army veteran is grappling with his new reality after Helene and Milton destroyed his New Port Richey home.

Bobby Reidy’s house has been deemed uninhabitable and he’s been living on a concrete driveway for the last two months.

The storm surge from Hurricane Helene poured into his home and the winds from Milton made matters worse.

With his two dogs in tow, Reidy is holding out hope that his housing situation will improve.

“Milton gave me a lot of roof damage,” said Reidy. “When it rains outside, it also rains inside. My home is probably not going to be repairable.”

Many neighbors and friends moved out of state following the storms.

“I don’t have people to talk to,” said Reidy. “That was a good neighborhood. Everybody was friendly and now they’re a little scattered to the wind, so it’s like I lost everything. Not just my possessions, but a lot of friendships.”

Reidy says despite frequent calls to FEMA, his application remains in progress. He also says the hotel housing assistance is still not enough to meet his long-term needs.

“He told me, ‘It’s just pending. You’re not denied. You’re going to get something.’ I just don’t know when,” Reidy said. “It’s just pending, pending, pending.”

Reidy’s future is now at the forefront of his concerns, and his worries grow deeper each day.

“My house is a disaster area,” said Reidy. “I need help just getting stuff out of it. I’m a 71-year-old man. I’m by myself. I don’t have any help.”
