NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. (WFLA) — A Louisiana man was arrested Friday after police said he charged New Port Richey residents thousands of dollars only to illegally dump hurricane debris.

According to the New Port Richey Police Department, Byram Washington charged Gulf Harbor residents $1500 for every load of hurricane debris he cleaned up for them.

After taking the debris, Washington illegally dumped over 120 yards of furniture and debris on someone’s private property of Marine Parkway without that person’s consent, investigators said.

The Lousiana resident was charged with felony illegal dumping over 500 pounds.

“We would like to extend our appreciation to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office and Pasco County Landfill Operations for their assistance with this case,” the department said. “Illegal dumping is a criminal offense under Florida State Statue 412.6(C). Please be aware of criminals preying on those affected by the storm.”
