NEW YORK, N.Y. (WFLA) — Days after former One Direction singer Liam Payne died while in Argentina, fans all over the world are paying tribute at his vigil in New York City.
On Wednesday, the 31-year-old singer fell to his death from the third-floor balcony of a Buenos Aires hotel.
Fans gathered in New York’s Washington Square Park over the weekend, where hundreds of flowers, candles, and handwritten messages and tributes were placed.
In the video above, fans are heard singing a few One Direction songs, including “Walking in the Wind” and “Night Changes.”
On Saturday, a video shows fans gathering around to pay their respects to the former band member.
“It was so beautiful. Thank you to everyone who came out today. You’ll forever be in our hearts Liam. Love you to the moon and back,” a fan wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
One Direction released a joint statement on Payne’s death Thursday, saying in part, “The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever. For now, our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and the fans who loved him alongside us. We will miss him terribly. We love you Liam.”
An autopsy revealed Payne died from “multiple traumas” and “internal and external bleeding” from the fall. A prosecutor added that the position of his body indicates Payne didn’t adopt a reflex posture during the fall, meaning he may have been in a state of semi- or total unconsciousness.
