TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Hurricane Milton shut down all Tampa Bay area schools last week, as the storm made landfall as a Category 3.
Now, as the area deals with widespread outages, many residents and schools remain without power and surrounded by debris.
So when do schools reopen?
Hillsborough County
Schools will be closed for students on Monday, Oct. 14.
The school district said they are dealing with significant flooding uprooted trees, and widespread power outages at 172 schools.
Reopening the schools will depend on power restoration, school facility conditions, staff concerns, and road conditions.
“We know there are questions about makeup days. We are in contact with the Florida Department of Education on our status.”
Pasco County
Pasco schools will remain closed on Monday, Oct. 14. They will release an update on Monday regarding school Tuesday.
The county continues to deal with power outages, facility repairs, and dangerous road conditions. Fuel shortages are also affecting school buses and other modes of transportation.
“Our priority is the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and families. We encourage everyone to follow local guidance, avoid unsafe areas, and conserve fuel as much as possible during this time of recovery.”
Hernando County
The school district will provide an update this weekend on whether they will resume operations on Monday.
As of Saturday, six schools remain without power and are littered with debris.
“We are in communication with Withlacoochee Electric and Duke Energy, each utility company is making every effort to restore power to all sites. We are also working with county officials to ensure that roads are safe for students and staff to get to and from school.”
Outside athletic events will continue as normal. Other events will be rescheduled as necessary.
Manatee County
Manatee schools will remain closed on Monday, Oct. 14. They will release an update on Monday regarding school Tuesday.
Sarasota County
Sarasota schools will remain closed on Monday, Oct. 14.
They anticipate schools to reopen early to mid-week.
“If your family is experiencing circumstances that may not allow your child to return to school for an extended period, we encourage you to contact your school directly. We are here to work with you to ensure your child’s educational needs are met during this time.”
Pinellas County
Pinellas schools will remain closed on Monday, Oct. 14. They will release an update on Monday regarding school Tuesday.
All sports and activities will also be canceled.
Citrus County
Citrus schools will be open on Monday, Oct. 14.
“While things may appear different, classrooms at both schools are safe and ready for students and staff.”
Polk County
Polk County schools must remain closed on Monday, Oct. 14 and Tuesday, Oct. 15. Schools are expected to reopen on Wednesday, Oct. 16.
