BRADENTON, Fla. (WFLA) — The Florida Department of Health in Manatee County issued a red tide alert for two beaches in Bradenton on Friday.
- Bradenton Beach: 10th Street Pier at 10th Street South
- Coquina Beach South Boat Ramp: 1465 Gulf Drive South
Rod and Reel Pier, located at 875 North Shore Drive remains under a red tide alert, initially issued on Nov. 15.
Residents and visitors are asked to avoid these waters, due to the presence of the toxin-producing dinoflagellate called Karenia brevis— a microscopic algae typically found in the Gulf of Mexico. High concentrations of this algae can turn the waters red or brown.
It is advised for you and your pets not to swim in the water or eat molluscan shellfish. The DOH suggests residents close windows and wash their skin and clothing thoroughly if they have come into contact with the toxins in the air.
Red tide can cause skin irritations, rashes, and burning or sore eyes. Sensitive individuals can experience respiratory irritation and may be at risk of more severe symptoms.
