HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — A former Hernando County deputy was arrested for stealing money, using the Fraternal Order of Police’s credit and debit cards for his personal use, according to the sheriff’s office.
On Nov. 8, the FOP Lodge 164 told HCSO they suspected 45-year-old Detective Bruce Nicols, the now former treasurer, and an investigation was launched on Nov. 14.
Officials said the next day, on Nov. 15, Nichols resigned.
“Despite Nichols having a career marked with significant achievements, we can assure the victim organization and the public, the investigation will be thorough and complete,” Sheriff Al Nienhuis said. “It is our hope that the investigation will either definitively exonerate Nichols or provide the State Attorney with a prosecutable case that will allow the victim organization to obtain justice.”
Deputies said Nichols had been with the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office since November 2006.
Further details are expected to be released at a later time.
