TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Citrus County residents who live along a portion of the Withlacoochee River were urged Friday night to secure their boats as water flow continues to increase.

Citrus County Emergency Management said there is turbulence and higher water levels downstream from the Inglis Dam due to increased water flow from the dam.

“Residents along the river below the dam who have boats tied to docks should check to ensure that their boats are secure,” officials said. “Persons should not swim or enter the river due to the swift current.”

The Withlacoochee River continues to be in major flood stage upstream from Lake Rousseau, officials said. The Southwest Florida Water Management District has to “increase water discharge” from the dam to manage water in the lake.

Residents were asked to prepare for higher water levels between Lake Rousseau and Cross Florida Barge Canal, which is expected to last for at least two weeks. Officials said the high flow event is expected to peak within seven to 10 days.

Anyone with questions is asked to call the Southwest Florida Water Management District at 352-316-7480.
