HOMOSASSA, Fla. (WFLA) — A large blaze that broke out at a property in Citrus County early Thursday morning left a shed destroyed, with only a few wooden beams still standing.

Crews with Citrus County Fire Rescue received reports of a structure fire on West Minuteman Street in Homosassa around 8 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 21.

Firefighters said they found a 1,000-square-foot wood-frame shed engulfed in flames when they arrived at the property about four minutes later.

After deploying multiple hoses to extinguish the blaze, crews secured the power to the shed by unplugging an extension cord, which they said was the only source of electricity to the structure.

Investigators said multiple items were also plugged into the extension cord, which may have been the source of the fire.

The blaze was brought under control by 8:14 a.m. However, efforts to ensure the fire was completely extinguished continued for about another hour.

Officials deemed the structure a “total loss.” As of Friday, investigators were still working to confirm whether the extension cord was the main cause of the fire.

In a news release, Citrus County Fire Rescue said this fire should serve as a reminder for residents to follow electrical safety guidelines, especially avoiding overloading extension cords.

The fire department’s community partner 1-800-BoardUp was contacted to provide immediate assistance to the property owner and their 9-month-old son, officials said. They were provided with items such as diapers, baby wipes, clothing and a jacket.

“We are grateful to our dedicated firefighters and community partners who worked collaboratively to ensure the safety and well-being of all involved,” the fire department said.
