YBOR CITY, Fla. (WFLA) – Ybor City is preparing for a massive crowd over the weekend for its annual Halloween bar crawl. The festivities take place one year after a mass shooting left two people dead and injured 16 others.

Kyla Ryker was among those injured when the shots sounded on 7th Avenue.

“I just remember hearing the gunshots, they were never-ending,” said Ryker. “I was really almost victim number three.”

Tampa police say a confrontation between two groups turned violent. Three people, including a 14-year-old, are charged in connecting to the shooting.

Harrison Boonstoppel was one of the individuals killed. Shortly after the incident, the 20-year-old’s mom said, “I feel today, I’m missing my son even more and I want everybody to know, this is not some distant place that these things are happening with guns.”

The incident sparked widespread conversation about safety in Ybor City. According to leaders with the Tampa Police Department, they’ve increased the number of security cameras, added off-duty patrols, and deployed medics on bikes throughout the area on Friday and Saturday nights.

The additional resources are an effort to prevent violence and quiet fears about the popular entertainment area.

“I have to worry about being in a crowd. I have to worry about loud noises when they are even loud in the hallway, I get scared,” Ryker said.
