TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) –The family of the 16-year-old boy who was tragically killed after being shot outside a Red Robin in Tampa over the weekend said they are “heartbroken” the boy was taken in an “act of senseless gun violence.”

The shooting occurred at 7:16 p.m. Saturday after deputies received reports of a shooting outside the Citrus Park Town Center, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said. When officials arrived, they found the boy with a gunshot wound to his upper body in the restaurant’s parking lot. He was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

While deputies have yet to identify the boy, a GoFundMe set up by his family identified him as 16-year-old Peter Hyman Jr. or “PJ” — an honor student and beloved son who was taken too soon.

“He was only 16 years old. He was a good kid, honor student at Jefferson High School, member of Greater Mount Carmel Church, and a beloved son, brother, grandchild, and friend. Those who know him know he was funny, sweet, goofy, and loved to dance, play video games, and basketball. He loved his family and friends and made friends with anyone without judgment,” the GoFundMe description read. “We are heartbroken.”

According to Chief Deputy Maurer, investigators are still searching for the suspect who fatally shot the teen and are working with witnesses to learn more.

“I don’t know if they knew each other,” Maurer said. “I knew that they were eating and a fight broke out, I don’t know exactly the nature of that. Our detectives are getting to the bottom of that.”

In an update Tuesday, the sheriff’s office said detectives have identified “multiple persons of interest” and are currently conducting interviews. Additionally, the two individuals who were detained following the shooting were not involved.

The investigation is ongoing.
