Tampa police announce safety plans as holiday shopping picks up

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The Tampa Police Department discussed their safety tips and patrol plans ahead of the holiday season.

In a press conference Tuesday morning, Chief Lee Bercaw and other officers outlined their protective measures to keep shoppers and retailers safe as foot traffic through stores begins to pick up.

The holidays yield a stronger police presence, as officers will be patrolling malls, shopping centers, and stores of all sizes.

They reminded shoppers to remain vigilant through the holidays, as more people will be shopping and on the roads. People are asked to stay alert, stay off their phones, and park in well-lit areas.

Officials also warned residents of porch pirates looking for packages during the season, and to be aware of scams. In December 2023, package thefts doubled from the previous period, TPD said.

“Our goal is to create a visible presence in shopping areas and in neighborhoods to deter thieves and keep our community safe,” Chief Bercaw said. “With more people out shopping and receiving packages, we want to remind everyone to stay alert and take simple precautions to protect themselves and their belongings.”

Drivers should remain alert of those who also may be driving under the influence.

Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity to the police department.
