TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A Tampa family said they believe the teen found dead near the Courtney Campbell Causeway Sunday is a 16-year-old Hillsborough County student.
While investigators have not confirmed his identity, his family is speaking out.
Eniola Olafemi, 16, was last seen on Nov. 12 by his grandmother, Cathy Jackson.
“I said, ‘are you going to go to school and stay there all day,'” Jackson said. “He said, ‘grandma, I am going to school and going to stay all day long.’ I said okay baby, and that’s the last time I seen him.”
His family said they spent days searching and handing out flyers, desperate for answers. Then on Sunday, detectives delivered the devastating news.
“They said, we found the body at Courtney Campbell Causeway, and we think it’s your grandson,” Jackson said. “They wanted to know again what he was wearing.”
His grandmother said now she is left with painful questions.
“They couldn’t even tell me how he died, how he ended up in the water for two days,” she said. “I say, honey, he’d been missing for eight days. Where has he been the rest [of those] days? They said we don’t know yet.”
Jackson said detectives don’t believe the death was suspicious.
“I think somebody kidnapped him,” she said. “I really do.”
As investigators work to confirm to identify the body found near the Courtney Campbell Causeway, Eniola’s family is holding to hope. They describe the teen as someone with a kind and generous spirit.
