LUTZ, Fla. (WFLA) — A 44-year-old man and 5-year-old son were killed in a murder-suicide in Lutz, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office announced.

According to Chief Deputy Joseph Maurer, the boy’s mother went to her husband’s home at 7:30 a.m. Friday on Cranbrook Drive to pick up the child, but no one answered the door.

Deputies responded to the mother’s call when she could not get ahold of the father. When deputies got there, they initially did not notice anything wrong.

“They knocked, announced, didn’t notice any nefarious activities and didn’t see any signs of foul play,” Maurer said.

However, the mother went to the home around 9:30 a.m. Once she got inside, she found the bodies of both her son and husband, both dead from gunshot wounds.

Maurer said the boy’s father shot his son before killing himself with the same weapon.

“This is an incredibly heartbreaking loss for this family, and our prayers are with them during this unimaginable time,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said. “Tragedies like this have a profound impact on everyone involved, including our deputies who responded to such a devastating scene right after Thanksgiving. We are committed to providing support to both the grieving family and our deputies as they process this difficult situation.”

According to the chief deputy, the father did not have a known criminal history. He was separated from his wife for about a year before the murder.

“Very shocking,” said Pamela Oliva, a neighbor. “Not anything I would have ever expected. One from the neighborhood. And specially him. I just never seen him to be that type to have any type of issues or anything at all. If he did, he hid it very well.”

At this time the investigation is ongoing.
