TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — South Tampa residents welcomed FEMA Disaster Survivor Assistance teams into their neighborhoods Friday.
8 On Your Side helped a woman living off South Westshore Boulevard apply for FEMA assistance almost three weeks ago. She said she was grateful to see them at her doorstep, but she wishes they came sooner.
“My age, I’m 89 years old. And I didn’t want to go through this again,” Terry Fleming said.
Fleming’s home flooded in both Hurricanes. She said she was terrified.
“One day I get up, put my feet down from bed in the water. I said oh the roof must be leaking. So I went to look in other rooms, and it was all over so that scared me to death,” Fleming said.
Friday she was told the FEMA representatives would call her back to set up an inspection of her home.
Her neighbors were inspected Thursday.
“She said very few items in there were not ruined. So we probably lost 90% of the contents of the house,” Sandra Hensley said.
FEMA said once documents are cleared and inspectors finish their visits, it can be between two and five weeks before FEMA responds.
“The process is a little bit rough at this time because there’s so many survivor registration we have now,” said Rossyveth Rey-Berríos, a FEMA representative.
Neighbors said now it’s about waiting for the help to kick in.
“The waiting game will be rough, but at least we know we are in the system and they’re going to get to us as soon as they can,” Hensley said.
Rey-Berrios said anyone who is denied assistance, should be sure to read the letter in its entirety where it will explain why they were denied.
