Donatello Italian Restaurant hosts special Thanksgiving dinner for families

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — For decades, a Tampa restaurant has hosted a special Thanksgiving feast for families in need.

The tradition at Donatello Italian Restaurant on North Dale Mabry Highway was started by Guido Tiozzo 38 years ago, and is now carried on by his son Gino Tiozzo, and wife Alessandra Tiozzo.

“This is my favorite holiday of the year. It’s something that we’ve done for almost my whole life here at the restaurant,” Donatello Owner Gino Tiozzo said.

“Thanksgiving doesn’t exist in Italy,” Alessandra Tiozzo said. “I learned about Thanksgiving here and I think it’s the best way to not only to give back the community but they are giving back. It’s really a gift for me.”

The tradition includes hosting an annual Thanksgiving for the children of Tampa and their families.

Shaquona Hydes brought her kids as well as families from the Boys and Girls Club to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal with a fine dining twist.

“This is awesome,” Hydes said. “It’s a great experience in a formal setting. I think it’s an awesome experience. It’s something different to say the least.”

Staff and volunteers served meals to 1,200 people in need.

The 38-year tradition includes turkey, all the fixings, and even pasta.

“We peel and make mashed potatoes, four cases of stuffing and 250 to 300 pounds of turkey breast,” Gino Tiozzo said.

There’s also special appearances from community players, athletes and even super heroes.

“It’s a big operation, but it’s really one of the most gratifying. And all of the staff that comes and volunteers their time,” Gino Tiozzo said.

Every child went home not only with a full belly but also gifts donated by the community.
