TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — In the wake of Hurricanes Helene and Milton, City of Tampa officials discussed the next steps as residents and business owners will soon receive substantial damage assessment letters via mail.
The extent of damage outlined in these letters is estimated based on a visual assessment of the flood hazard area that city officials conducted following the hurricanes.
Substantial damage is calculated by FEMA based on the property’s structure depreciation to assess what remodeling or rebuilding improvements can be made to the home or business.
According to Development and Economic Opportunity Administrator, Abbye Feeley, residents who receive the letter should fill out the attached substantial damage determination form to see if any further steps must be taken.
Completing this form is not only required by law but is a necessary step in reducing flood insurance premiums throughout the city.
