AVON PARK, Fla. (WFLA) — A mother and daughter duo were arrested over the weekend for stealing roughly $100,000 from a non-profit childcare center in Avon Park, the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday.
Tikia Robertson, 50, the former director of the Avon Park Community Child Development Center and her daughter, Wilneisha Gammage, 27, are facing charges of fraud for their “questionable transactions.”
Deputies were alerted of the theft when a new treasurer at the childcare center discovered suspicious transactions from the books dating back to January 2023.
When Robertson was confronted about the transactions in May 2023, she resigned from her position, as an internal investigation began, officials said.
The sheriff’s office launched a criminal investigation in August 2023 and found that Robertson wrote more than 80 fraudulent checks to Gammage between Jan. 15, 2020, and Dec. 29, 2022, totaling $93,116.02.
It was also discovered that Gammage used the company credit card to pay her car payment, car insurance, and Verizon account several times, charging a total of $5,754.92.
According to HCSO, a total of $98,870.94 was stolen from the non-profit center.
Robertson and Gammage were each charged with fraud to obtain more than $50,000, grand theft of over $20,000 but less than $100,000, illegal use of credit cards, and uttering a false instrument.
