SEBRING, Fla. (WFLA) — A former Department of Children and Families employee who was arrested in connection with the death of her adopted daughter is facing additional charges after detectives said they found more evidence of abuse within the home.

Deputies with the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office said they found 34-year Diane Natasha Mack’s 13-year-old daughter unresponsive at her home on Bianca Street around midnight on Nov. 15.

According to authorities, the girl had “clearly been severally abused” and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Weeks after her arrest, on Thursday, Dec. 5, a Highlands County jury indicted Mack on charges of first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse, kidnapping and tampering with evidence.

However, authorities said Mack was also indicted on two counts of third-degree felony child abuse after the investigation revealed that she had been abusing two other children who lived at the home in Sebring.

Further investigation at the home also uncovered the extent of abuse the 13-year-old girl who died had endured, the sheriff’s office said.

Detectives said they found evidence that the girl, who was homeschooled, was restrained in the garage. Investigators don’t know how long she had been held there, but said it appeared that the girl was “secured to the garage door” and monitored by a security camera mounted in the garage.

Authorities said the young girl was “extremely emaciated and obviously malnourished” when she was found, and was covered in wounds, some that appeared to be older and some new.

When deputies first responded to the home in November, Mack reportedly told them conflicting stories on when she had found her daughter unresponsive.

Officials said Mack drove four other children who lived at the home to Titusville and then returned to Sebring before calling 911.
