TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A Florida man was killed by a Volusia Sheriff’s Office sniper after he reportedly fired more than 200 rounds at neighboring condos over several hours on Thanksgiving morning, authorities said.

Joseph DiFusco reportedly was shooting at neighboring condos along Ocean Shore Boulevard near Ormond-by-the-Sea. He also fired shots at a sheriff’s office vehicle from inside his condo, according to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office.

Neighbors were evacuated from the area and DiFusco continued shooting for several hours, deputies said.

“This is Ormond-by-the-Sea. We leave our windows open at night and our doors open at night,” Jason Valiant, who lives in the condos, told WESH. “We’ve never seen anything like this.”

“In 37 years, I don’t think I’ve ever had an experience where I had to position snipers and say, ‘You have a green light to do your job,'” Sheriff Mike Chitwood said.

No deputies or residents were injured.

“There was no negotiating with this guy,” Chitwood said. “My objective was to make sure every single deputy went home for Thanksgiving dinner.”
