ORLANDO, Fla. (WFLA) — The teenage suspect accused of opening fire in downtown Orlando during a Halloween celebration will be charged as an adult, State Attorney Andrew Bain announced Monday.

Bain held a news conference to provide an update on the shooting that killed two and wounded several others on Halloween night.

17-year-old Jaylen Dwayne Edgar is charged with two counts of second-degree murder with a firearm and six counts of attempted second-degree murder with a firearm. More charges could be in the works, according to Bain.

Edgar will be formally charged as an adult when a grand jury convenes, Bain said. The grand jury would decide whether or not to upgrade the charges to first-degree.

“The defendant’s prior history consists of one grand theft motor vehicle charge, which is a third-degree felony by law,” Bain said. “Since that charge is still open, that case also will now be filed in the adult circuit court and will work its way through the judicial process the same way the mass shooting will.”

Surveillance camera video shows a man, identified by police as Edgar, pulling out a gun and opening fire into a large crowd gathered in downtown Orlando. Two people were fatally shot, six others were wounded by gunfire and one person was trampled in the chaos.

Police are still searching for the person who accompanied Edgar downtown that night. They estimated nearly 75,000 people gathered in the area on the night of the shooting.

In response to the shooting, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer declared a local state of emergency for establishments within the city’s downtown entertainment district. It will implement a curfew from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. and end alcohol sales at midnight.
