ORLANDO, Fla. (WFLA) — On Thursday, a jury determined the family of a teen who died after falling off an Orlando theme park ride should be paid $310 million in damages.

The family of 14-year-old Tyree Sampson sued the FreeFall drop tower ride manufacturer, Austria-based Funtime Handels, alleging negligence in his 2022 death at ICON Park.

An investigation found that although Sampson was about 100 pounds heavier than the recommended weight limit for the ride, two seats were adjusted to accommodate his size, which allowed him to slip out of the restraints and fall from the ride. The recommended rider weight was not posted near the ride.

After the owner was fined and the ride was taken down, Sampson’s family settled lawsuits against the owner and ICON Park. The Funtime Handels lawsuit was the final remaining case.

According to NBC affiliate WESH, Sampson’s mother, Nekia Dodd, along with his father and older brother appeared in court on Thursday.

“This calamity of errors, and mistakes and negligence has crossed over from Europe to Orlando,” Sampson family attorney Michael Haggard said.

A new law has also been passed by state lawmakers in Sampson’s name.
