Florida driver being chased by deputies hits 115 mph before crashing into tree

OCALA, Fla. (WFLA) — A driver who was reportedly fleeing from Marion County deputies reached speeds of up to 115 mph before crashing into a tree.

The entire high-speed pursuit was captured on dash camera footage, which the Marion County Sheriff’s Office released earlier this week.

It was around 11 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 26 when deputies said they first spotted the suspect, 19-year-old Johnathan Brooks, speeding past them near Southeast 58th Avenue and Larch Road.

At the time, Brooks was traveling at 71 mph in a 45-mph zone, authorities said. Deputies tried to initiate a traffic stop, but said Brooks fled “at a high rate of speed.”

As Brooks turned onto South Highway 441, a third deputy joined the pursuit. Officials said Brooks continued driving for several miles, reaching speeds of up to 115 mph before he failed to stop at an intersection.

He then crossed over Southeast 110th Street and struck a large tree. His vehicle became immobilized, and authorities said they could see that Brooks and a passenger were trapped inside the crushed truck.

Marion County Fire Rescue helped extricate Brooks and the passenger, who were both taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The sheriff’s office said Brooks was later arrested for fleeing to elude a law enforcement officer with disregard for safely causing serious injury.
