HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. (WFLA) — A 15-year-old is dead and another child was rescued in South Florida on Sunday morning, according to NBC affiliate WPTV.
At 7:20 a.m., two children were reported to be in distress in the water near Gulfstream Park.
A lifeguard rescued one child, but when the Boynton Beach Fire Rescue and Palm Beach County Ocean Rescue responded to the scene, another child and a mother were still in the water.
WPTV said the mother was rescued, while the 15-year-old’s body was found around 12:20 p.m.
“Someone told me about something that had happened here and there was a drowning with a family,” a Boyton Beach resident said. “And some lived and did not, missing. And I was in shock.”
The fire rescue Captain was reportedly injured during the call and was taken to a nearby hospital in severe condition. He has since been discharged and is expected to fully recover, WPTV reported.
“Very dangerous today,” Palm Beach County Ocean Rescue Lieutenant Andrew Rogers told WPTV. “It’s basically one big washing machine out there…… Water’s going very single direction, rip currents everywhere. It’s a very dangerous day.”
