ORLANDO, Fla. (WFLA) — Walt Disney World is growing in the animal department.

For the first time in seven years, a Sumatran tiger welcomed a baby boy, named Bakso, at Animal Kingdom.

“He arrived under the watchful eye of the animal care team members, who are captivated by his curious and playful personality,” Disney World said.

The video shows Bakso, and his mother, Sohni, snuggling, playing, and enjoying each other’s company in their den.

Dr. Natalie Mylniczenko, a veterinarian who took care of Sohni, throughout her 4-month pregnancy said the team was able to use advanced technology and hormone experts to monitor her health up until the birth.

At Walt Disney World Resort, a newborn, tiny tiger is making a great addition to a declining species. According to Dr. Mylniczenko, the birth was significant and well-planned and would provide Sohni with frequent blood tests and ultrasounds to ensure the health of both Sohni and Bakso.

Sumatran tigers are in decline, with only 600 left in the wild and managed care. Disney said Bakso serves as a “beacon of hope” for the critically endangered species.

Guests will be able to see Bakso grow alongside his mom starting in early 2025 in the Maharajah Jungle Trek. Bakso will be in his mother’s care until he is around 18 to 24 months old.
