TAMPA Fl, (BLOOM) – Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and as you prepare to feast on turkey, stuffing, and all the trimmings, your furry friend may already be planning their great table heist. With the smell of roasted turkey wafting through the air, it’s no surprise our pets find it hard to resist.
In fact, searches for “dog begging for food” have skyrocketed by +278% this week, proving that pet parents everywhere are facing the same challenge. But keeping your dog away from the holiday spread isn’t just about preserving your plate — it’s about ensuring their health and teaching good manners to prevent future begging.
To help, professional dog trainer Annie-Mae Levy of Woofz, a dog and puppy training app, has shared her top four tips for keeping your pup out of trouble this Thanksgiving.
1. Ignore the Puppy Dog Eyes
Let’s face it, dogs are masters of persuasion, especially when they flash those sad eyes. But giving in to their begging — or even scolding them — reinforces the behavior.
“Dogs learn by association,” Levy says. “If begging gets them what they want, they’ll keep doing it.”
The solution? Ignore it. If begging doesn’t result in food or attention (positive or negative), your pup will eventually realize it’s not worth the effort.
2. Keep the Table and Floor Spotless
Sometimes, dogs don’t need you to hand over a treat — the crumbs you leave behind are reward enough.
“Clean up spills and scraps immediately, so there’s nothing for your dog to scavenge,” Levy advises.
If you’re worried about sneaky paws during dinner, consider placing your dog in another room or crate until the meal is over.
3. Offer a Distraction
Why fight over the turkey when your pup can have their own feast? Provide them with a tasty alternative before you sit down to eat.
“A frozen Kong stuffed with healthy treats is a great way to keep dogs busy,” Levy suggests. It not only satisfies their hunger but also entertains them long enough for you to enjoy your meal in peace.
4. Create a Cozy Spot for Your Pup
Even the most well-trained dogs can feel left out when the family gathers for a meal. Instead of letting them hover around the table, create a special spot for them nearby.
“Practice ‘sit’ and ‘stay’ commands in a cozy area with blankets and toys,” Levy says. “This helps your dog feel included without being a distraction.”
Bonus tip: If your dog makes it through the meal without begging, reward their good behavior with a small, dog-safe treat as a Thanksgiving thank-you.
A Feast for You and Peace for Your Pup
With these tips, you can focus on enjoying your Thanksgiving dinner while keeping your dog happy, healthy, and out of trouble. After all, the holiday is about gratitude — and what better way to show it than by including your furry friend in the festivities, just in a way that works for everyone?
