BLOOM (TAMPA) – No Thanksgiving table is complete without cranberry sauce, and this year, you can take yours to the next level with a gourmet twist. Top caterer and chef Deb Murray joined Gayle Guyardo, host of the global health and wellness show Bloom, to share a stunning cranberry sauce recipe that combines bright citrus, warm amaretto, and crunchy toasted almonds.
Here’s how to create this elevated holiday side dish that’s sure to dazzle your guests.
Cranberry Sauce with Amaretto, Orange Zest, and Toasted Almonds
Serves: 6-8
Ingredients:
- 12-ounce bag of fresh or frozen cranberries
- 2/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1/3 cup amaretto liqueur
- Zest of 1 orange, cut into long strips
- 3 tablespoons sliced almonds, toasted
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Cranberries:
Rinse the cranberries under cold water, removing any soft or blemished ones.
2. Cook the Sauce:
In a medium saucepan, combine cranberries, sugar, amaretto, and orange zest strips. Stir to coat the cranberries evenly and place the saucepan over medium heat.
3. Simmer:
Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, stirring occasionally. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until the cranberries burst and the sauce thickens.
4. Toast the Almonds:
While the sauce is simmering, toast the sliced almonds in a dry skillet over medium heat. Stir frequently until golden and fragrant, about 2-3 minutes. Set aside.
5. Cool and Thicken:
Remove the saucepan from heat and let the cranberry sauce cool to room temperature. The sauce will thicken as it cools.
6. Add the Almonds:
Just before serving, stir in the toasted almonds for a delightful crunch and nutty flavor.
7. Serve:
Remove the orange zest strips if desired for a polished presentation, or leave them in for a rustic look. Serve at room temperature or chilled as a perfect complement to your Thanksgiving feast.
Make-Ahead Tip:
This cranberry sauce can be prepared up to three days in advance, making your Thanksgiving prep stress-free. For the best texture, toast and add the almonds just before serving.
This cranberry sauce isn’t just a condiment—it’s a conversation starter. The tangy cranberries, sweet amaretto, bright orange zest, and crunchy almonds create a symphony of flavors and textures that will elevate your holiday meal.
