PALM BEACH, Fla. (WFLA) — The last surviving deputy who was hit by an SUV driver in Palm Beach County last Thursday has died, according to local officials.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said after days in the hospital, Deputy Ignacio “Dan” Diaz died at 12:42 p.m. Monday after battling critical injuries from the crash.
“Despite his courageous fight, Deputy Diaz lost the battle due to the injuries sustained by the tragic crash that also claimed the lives of Cpl. Luis Paez and D/S Butch Waller,” the sheriff’s office wrote on social media. “Once again, we find ourselves mourning the loss of another hero who dedicated his life to serving and protecting Palm Beach County.”
The three motorcycle deputies were all hit by the SUV while stopped on the shoulder of Southern Boulevard in Loxahatchee on Nov. 21.
Paez and Waller were pronounced dead at the scene.
“We stand together, honoring their memory and supporting their families, friends, and colleagues through this time of immense sorrow,” the sheriff’s office wrote. “Let us remember their courage and commitment to duty as we pledge to continue their legacy of service. To serve and protect was their oath — honoring them is our duty,”
