ST. PETERSBURG Fla, (BLOOM) – St. Petersburg is about to experience basketball like never before, thanks to the Gateway Bison, the city’s newest semi-professional basketball team. Competing in the American Basketball Association (ABA)—the world’s largest professional sports league—the Bison aren’t just bringing electrifying sports action to town; they’re uniting the community with a game they love.

A Vision Fueled by Passion

The Gateway Bison is the brainchild of Morgan Zook, a 26-year-old co-founder and co-owner of Gateway Subs, a local business established in 2021. A basketball enthusiast and one of the top players in several local men’s leagues, Zook realized the potential for basketball to bring St. Pete together.

His love for the game is evident in every aspect of his life. In addition to playing at an elite level, Zook coaches the Shorecrest Middle School boys’ basketball team. This deep connection to basketball inspired him to aim higher—founding a semi-professional team in St. Pete. After exploring options, Zook landed on the ABA, a league known for its fast-paced, high-scoring games and innovative rules designed to keep fans on the edge of their seats.

The ABA Difference

Unlike traditional basketball leagues, the ABA offers unique rules that emphasize speed and strategy. The league features a 24-second shot clock, and teams must get the ball across half-court within seven seconds instead of the NBA’s standard eight. Additionally, defensive plays earn bonuses: a backcourt steal followed by a basket adds an extra point to the score. These quirks create an entertaining style of basketball that’s perfect for fans looking for excitement.

Building a Team to Compete

Zook brought in Quin Cooper, a 32-year-old with six years of professional overseas experience, to serve as the Bison’s head coach and general manager. Having played in Britain, the Netherlands, and Malta, Cooper’s leadership and familiarity with international leagues make him the ideal choice to guide the team.

The Bison’s roster is stacked with talent, led by standout player Justin Blanks. A former professional in Germany, Blanks is currently averaging an impressive 33 points per game. The team also features Gio Offard, a point guard with exceptional passing skills. Offard, who previously played professionally in Switzerland, is using his time with the Bison to recover from a knee injury and regain his form, with hopes of returning to the international stage.

Community-Centered Basketball

The Gateway Bison aren’t just about basketball—they’re about giving back. As a nonprofit organization, the team relies on donation-based admission for home games, making it accessible for fans of all ages and backgrounds. Any funds left after covering operational expenses will be donated to local causes to help those in need.

The Bison’s home opener is set for Saturday, December 7, at Gibbs High School at 5 p.m., kicking off a stretch of nine home games out of their final 11. Fans are encouraged to come out every weekend to support the team.

Local Businesses in the Spotlight

The Bison have partnered with local businesses, including Beach Town Yoga and The Source Chiropractic, for sponsorships. Zook is leveraging his Gateway Subs business to promote these sponsors, including flyers in to-go bags to connect customers with local companies. This cross-promotion highlights the team’s commitment to strengthening St. Pete’s community, both on and off the court.

Join the Herd

With a roster of talented players, a passionate owner, and a mission to give back, the Gateway Bison are poised to become a beloved part of St. Pete’s sports scene. Whether you’re a die-hard basketball fan or just looking for affordable family fun, the Bison’s games promise an experience you won’t forget.

Mark your calendars for December 7 and get ready to cheer on the Gateway Bison—a team built on passion, purpose, and the power of community.
