TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Former Florida congressman Matt Gaetz said he is no longer seeking the position of U.S. attorney general Thursday.
In a post on social media, Gaetz said he came to the decision after meeting with senators Wednesday.
“I appreciate their thoughtful feedback – and the incredible support of so many,” Gaetz said. “While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition.”
President-elect Donald Trump announced that Matt Gaetz would be his nomination for attorney general. However, Gaetz’s appointment was likely in danger as several Republican senators expressed reservations about the controversial congressman serving as AG.
“I remain fully committed to see that Donald J. Trump is the most successful President in history,” Gaetz said. “I will forever be honored that President Trump nominated me to lead the Department of Justice and I’m certain he will Save America.”
