MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (WFLA) — A 19-year-old swimmer reportedly drowned in Miami Beach over the weekend while saving his younger sister.
Miami Beach Police said they responded to South Pointe Park around 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9, after receiving reports of two people in distress.
Victor Castaneda Jr.’s family told NBC 6 Miami the teen had just gotten into the water with his younger sister when they got caught in a rip current.
The two children began yelling for help, and amid their struggle, the 19-year-old reportedly threw his sister closer to shore.
Castaneda’s family said a Good Samaritan helped pull the teen’s sister to shore. But the time they looked back, Castaneda had vanished from sight.
Police searched for the missing swimmer Saturday and Sunday before suspending their efforts.
According to Castaneda’s family, his younger sister was uninjured after the rescue.
The teen’s family told reporters they have accepted that he likely drowned and now just hope to find his body.
“My brother died a hero,” Jessica Castaneda, the 19-year-old’s older sister, told NBC Miami.
“They say his body could’ve traveled south and we’re just hoping somebody sees him out in the water,” she added. “We just really want to bring him home.”
