ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) — The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a deputy-involved shooting after an armed suspect charged toward officers with a handgun on Friday night.

Around 10:30 p.m., deputies responded to St. Petersburg home, located on 47th Avenue North, in regards to a domestic incident.

Neighbors, like Trace Hunt, were on alert with the huge police presence in the neighborhood.

“All we heard was the pop pops, the consistency of pop pops, and then cop cars, sirens, and it just sounded like World War III coming in the neighborhood,” said Hunt.

At the home was a 37-year-old woman, along with a teenage girl and a teenage boy, and the suspect, 44-year-old Jeremy Lyle Reed, who was armed inside. Reed was the mother’s domestic partner, according to the sheriff’s office.

The girl told officials that Reed pointed a handgun at her and said, “Are you ready to have some fun?”

Additional deputies were requested to the incident, as they ushered the victims out of the home and to a safer area a block away on 48th Avenue North. Deputies set up a perimeter to arrest Reed with aggravated assault with a firearm.

“There was three people that ran towards my home, two ladies and a young man,” Hunt said. “We heard a scream, it was a very piercing scream.”

As Reed, armed with a black semi-automatic handgun, emerged from the home, he charged toward deputies and the victims.

Three of the deputies, identified as Deputy Jessee Creaser, Deputy Dylan Schultz, and Corporal Stuart Kellman, fired at Reed and struck him.

Reed, who was hit several times in the lower body, was transferred to a nearby hospital, where he is in critical condition.

No one else was injured.

“The cops did what they had to do, it’s unfortunate, I hope everyone, you know, is able to be okay from this,” said Hunt.

The deputies involved are on paid administrative assignment, pending the outcome of the investigation.
