MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. (WFLA) — Over 80 people were arrested for “for crimes related to looting and scams involving vulnerable beach residents and businesses” in the wake of hurricanes Helene and Milton, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.

In a news conference Thursday, Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri discussed undercover operations targeting crime on the barrier islands.

Of the 45 people arrested by “anti-looting patrols,” only two were from Pinellas County. 41 of them were not U.S. citizens.

Those arrested racked up charges including armed robbery, burglary, loitering and prowling, grand theft, vandalism and trespassing.

In an operation targeting unlicensed contractors, 58 people were arrested. 21 of the suspects were not from Pinellas County. The operation resulted in 80 charges for the suspects.
