TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — While Hurricane Milton was largely a wind event, many neighborhoods still experienced significant flooding and standing water inside homes.
Here’s a breakdown of insurance and aid for which you could qualify.
First, property insurance. This is for property damage caused by wind. Contact your carrier or agent directly to start your claim. You’ll be assigned an adjuster, but be prepared to wait for a in-person inspection.
In the meantime, you can make immediate repairs to keep damage from getting worse, just take pictures every step of the way.
Next, flood insurance. If your home flooded, either by storm surge or rising water from rain or rivers, you’ll need a separate flood insurance policy to cover damages.
Contact your agent and file a separate claim.
You can also apply for FEMA assistance, at https://www.disasterassistance.gov/. Aid can be used for temporary housing, home repairs, car damage childcare expenses and spoiled food replacement that are not covered by your insurance company.
If approved, you’ll likely receive a $750 payment for immediate needs, but you’re still eligible for additional money. It is not income based, but the application will ask about gross family income and dependents who claim the home as a primary address.
This information is used to determine if you are eligible for other types of aid, such as loans.
If insurance and aid is not enough for your situation, you may be eligible for a loan through the Small Business Administration.
