TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Sherry Dude and her husband have cut wet drywall to prevent mold and pulled out damaged flooding after storm surge pushed at least 5 inches of water inside their Westshore home.
They’re working and waiting on an adjuster from their flood insurance company.
“I filed my insurance claim on my bed at three in the morning with water all around me,” she said.
Like many, she questions what the maximum coverage will be and how much will be out of pocket.
For most policies, the standard is $250,000. There may or may not be coverage for contents, depending on what you purchased. In Sherry’s case, her deductible is $10,000.
While she waits, she’s piled her ruined belongings high at the curb.
Florida CFO Jimmy Patronis spoke in Madeira Beach and urged homeowners to come to a free insurance village that will Friday, Saturday and Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Clearwater Parks and Recreation Center.
“Come to us, and let us help you solve your insurance claims process,” Patronis said. “We’ll have about 42 different insurance carriers there, and I’ve told the insurance carriers. If you want to participate in our insurance village, you must write checks on-site.”
Patronis warned against signing away your rights to contractors.
“You should not sign a single document from anyone that approaches your home,” he said.
